For the Culture

LOGLINE

The sudden death of her mother forces a single mom to face her childhood traumas while struggling for a connection to her Filipino roots.

SUMMARY

For the Culture is a personal film that centers on Reyna, a Black/Filipino single mother, as she delves into identity, heritage, and family complexities. Following her mother’s unexpected death, Reyna is left to navigate the dormant side of her identity and heritage for herself and her son, Lucian. Her journey begins with learning to cook lumpia and being in community with other Filipinos. Things take a turn, as this cultural rediscovery brings back painful childhood memories that Reyna must confront head-on, which later redefine her sense of culture and belonging. The film celebrates multiracial identity, the strength of single mothers, and the connections formed through food, language, and tradition.
