Here are 7 more films to look for this year !
7.The Nun 2 (Release Date: September 8th)
Quite honestly, The Nun (2018) was not a good film with a 25% on rotten tomatoes. It seemed to have failed commercially and critically. Despite this, it managed to make $365.6 million against a $22 million dollar budget, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise. It was a collection of conveniently placed jump scares or scary situations that didn’t lead up to much. I found the nun character terrifying in The Conjuring 2, I was very surprised at the little bit of screen time she had yet had such intense effects on the audience. Then, to have her own movie, and it not deliver on even a fraction of intensity was disappointing. I figure there’s nowhere to go but up with The Nun 2, and Bonnie Aarons will return as Valak for new nightmare fuel!
6. The Exorcist [Remake] – (Release Date October 13th)
David Gordon Green who directed Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021), and Halloween Ends (2022) will be directing another iconic remake this October! The Exorcist remake is said to be a sequel to the 1973 film when young Reagan is possessed by a demonic entity. The film will be distributed by Blumhouse but many details are being kept private leading to a lot of speculation with the fans.
5. Saw X (Release Date: October 28th)
And yet another Saw installation no one asked for…
Spiral (2021) was marketed as being the last film of the Saw franchise and then it went on to make $40 million worldwide at the box office and when you do numbers like that, we know another film is coming shortly after! I was genuinely surprised how much I liked Spiral (2021) .Especially with the story coming from Chris Rock of all people, and Sam Jackson played his dad (need, I say more).
Saw X will be a prequel, focusing on Tobin Bell, the infamous jigsaw killer. Although technically jigsaw claims to not kill people, but set elaborate, deadly traps to test how far his victims will go to stay alive. I’m not a gore hound by any means. I’ve seen the 1st, 2nd Saw movie and Spiral and I wanted to throw up during all of them :), but if gore is your thing, I definitely recommend this entire franchise. Debuting right in time for Halloween it doesn’t look like it’s ending anytime soon !
4. The Hunger Games: Ballad of the Songbirds and Snakes
(Release Date: November 17th)
Who doesn’t love a dystopian film where kids fight to the death for our entertainment?
This hunger games film will be a prequel about President SnowBefore he becomes the tyrannical president of Panem. A very Interesting cast lineup, including: Viola Davis, Hunter Schafer(Euphoria) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones). I’m eager to see what new Perspectives to the hunger, games, universe this film will bring.
3. Insidious: The Dark Realm (Release Date: July 7th)
Patrick Wilson will be making his directorial debut! Jason Blum will be producing and
I am VERY sad to announce Patric Wilson won’t be reprising his role as Ed Warren in this 5th
Insidious film. Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll change his mind and hop out of the director’s chair for a little bit.
Despite the last entry, Insidious:The Last Key, not doing well with critics, it made $168 million at the box office, against a reported budget of $10 million. With a box return like that a sequel was bound to happen whether critics be damned! It’s been announced Lin Shaye will be reprising her role as Elise, but not much information about the plot of this film, but that makes it even more intriguing.
2. Scream 6 (Release Date: March 10th)
It’s a well-known joke in the whole community that once a franchise goes to New York, or space is doomed. However, I have a ton of faith in Wes Craven’s influence and I don’t believe this movie will suck. None of the scream movies have been up to this point and they’ve been at it since 1966!! I wish Wes was still with us to see his baby still kicking butt at the box office 27 years later! Neve Campbell in Courteney Cox will be reprising their roles as Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers hitting us right in the nostalgia. In Scream 6 it’s 25 years after the initial Ghostface murders, the killer has resurfaced once again hunting people in the bloodline of his original targets.
- The Blackening (Release Date: June 16th)
Coming in at number one its one for the culture!! The Blackening is a Scream-like horror comedy about Black friends celebrating Juneteenth with a weekend getaway, only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin and at the mercy of a twisted killer.
For any who don’t know Juneteenth/Jubilee Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The holiday has been observed for over 156 years.
The title seems to be a meta comedy about the “Magical Negro” and “Sacrificial” Black characters who have been killed off in film for their usually, white counterparts. Usually being used like cannon fodder to extend others lifespan. I’m super excited to see this concept confronted, especially with a twist of comedy. Comedic relief seems to be the best way to deliver a conversation that’s uncomfortable to have.

I was introduced to Bravemaker in July 2022 just days before the Bravemaker Film Festival in Redwood City. I ran into Tony Gapistone passing out flyers outside of the Century 20 Theater. We talked for a bit and fast forward a few days and I bought a VIP pass, went all 3 days and had the time of my life. This was my first film festival and it set the bar pretty high. I had an amazing time, made career changing connections, and completely stepped outside of my comfort zone. It made me realize that making big steps doesn’t always have to take a long time.
